Tests-
Formative assement is a necessary tool in order to gage student understanding. The earth/environmental science team uses common assements in an effort to maintain uniformity in teaching this subject. Study guides and other resources are readily available to students to use for tests and are encouraged. There are NO reatakes or test corrections allowed in this course. While this may be different from other classes at Millbrook High School the EES team feels that there are better ways to demonstrate mastery of the content. Grade replacements are available in 2 ways. The midterm at the end of the first semester can replace any/all of the sememester 1 unit tests and the mock final at the end of the year can replace any/all of the semester 2 unit tests grades.
Late Work Policy-
Late work is accepted until the end of the unit in accordance with the Millbrook High School student handbook. If a student fails to turn an assignment in on time, they will be given an alternate assignment that covers the same material to turn in for full credit up until the day of the Unit Assessment.

Tutorials
It is the students responsibility to request help. All teachers are available to schedule tutorial sessions. Please ask if you are struggling. Do not wait until the day of the test, it is too late at that point. The classroom website provides video lectures as well as supplemental study materials for students who need extra help.
Other Information
This is a science class. Therefore, we will spend time outside of the classroom. There is a chance that you may get wet or dirty if we go outside. It would be in your best intrest to wear lab appropriate clothing at all times. We will create our own set of class specific rules the first day of class.
PARENTS
Email is by far the best way to stay in contact with teacher. Teachers are usually not afforded the luxury of being in the classroom outside of intrructional time. Therefore, it is critical for you to provide your email address. The teacher will email you to update about grades, performance/behavior (positive and negative), and general class topics. This webiste contains all of the information that will be covered this year as well as a day to day calendar and explanations of day to day activities so that you can help your student keep up with their work. This is a team effort. In order for your child to be successful, there needs to be open communication between the teacher, parent, and student.
A little about this class.......
This is a 9th grade level, introductory science course that is required for graduation per the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
Environmental Science is a multidisciplinary academic field that integrates physical and biological sciences, (including but not limited to ecology, physics, chemistry, biology, soil science, geology, atmospheric science and geography) to the study of the environment, and the solution of environmental problems. Environmental science provides an integrated, quantitative, and interdisciplinary approach to the study of environmental systems.

What can I expect from this course?
When you walk into the classroom each day there will be a link to the daily bellringer on the board. These are counted as daily participation grades. This is a partially flipped classroom meaning that leactures/notes are sometimes given in a video format. Most notes sections have guided notes that accompany them, however student should not rely soley on the guided notes and should be proactive in taking their own notes as future science courses rarely use guided notes. Along with the lecture, there is an engaging inquiry based lab or activity that finishes each class. All assignments are graded and recorded. This class is in the process of going paperless. Therefore, most of the questions/forms that you will submit will be an online submission form. Test are in multiple choice format in order to align to the NC Final Exam and are taken on a bubble sheet using a white board marker. Coloring utensils, white board markers, and a writing utensil are essential for success in this course. We use the internet on a daily basis however, that does not give students free reign of thier cell phones/tablets. While it is encouraged to bring these items to class, students need to consider the appropriate times to use these materials. For student that do not have access to these items, there are classroom sets of IPads and laptops that are availble for checkout and use during the class period. Students should maintain a class notebook that will keep notes and other important information for use at a later date.

- Respectful Behavior: Be respectful to yourself, the teacher, and others in the classroom. Raise your hand to be recognized. Do not interrupt. Profanity, arguing, back-talking, or complaining will NOT be tolerated. You will need to raise your hand and get permission to get out of your seat (getting tissue, sharpening pencils, throwing items in the trash, etc.). Any disrespectful behavior will be dealt with by an administrator in accordance with MHS policy. Please dress appropriately at all times. This includes hats, or any other kind of headwear. Dress code will be enforced at all times.
- Electronic Devices: No electronics should be used in the classroom unless otherwise directed– this includes iPods and music devices. Anything that has a battery in it is an electronic device for those of you who wish to try and cheat the system. Headphones are not allowed in class unless permission is granted. According to school policy, if a phone is used outside of a granted time the teacher can and will take it. It may be returned it at the end of the block at the teacher's discression, otherwise it will be turned into the office. A second offense within a week will result in a write up and ALC. There is no need for phones to be on the desk outside of the directed time.

Student absences that result in missed laboratory activities, homework and or tests are expected to be made up ASAP. In accordance with MHS policy, student have untio the end of the unit to submit missing work for a one letter grade penalty (this means that the highest possible grade is a 90, assuming that the assignment was completly correct and deserved a 100 grade origionally.) Any missed assignments can be found online. It is your responsibility to get work you missed.
- Bathroom Policy: During instructional time, no student will be allowed to leave the room. I suggest you go before the bell. Just because you drop your things off and go does not mean that you are on time for class. Unless you have permission, you will be counted tardy for entering the room after the final bell.
- Cheating: Cheating or copying another student’s work is STRICTLY PROHIBITED. If you are caught cheating, you will receive a ZERO and the person who allowed you to copy will receive a ZERO. None of the work can be made up and students may be referred to the office for disciplinary action.
